Charlotte and Todd lived in a gated community in a huge house with a garden and a pool. The place was nothing like where Nash had been raised on the edge of the ghetto. River’s parents were the opposite of Nash’s in every way. He adored them. With every story River’s parents shared, Nash felt himself digging an inch deeper into River’s life. He wanted that. He wanted this. Even though River spent the whole night blushing and hiding his face, Nash wanted more. He wanted all the memories of River’s childhood. His phone buzzed several times during the night. He ignored it, not wanting to be rude. The first moment everyone else was otherwise occupied, Nash checked it.

Mom: Mike doesn’t have any help tonight. Jason is out of town.

Mom: You know I wouldn’t ask, but I’m worried Mike will get hurt if he tries pulling a job alone.

Mom: I understand why you’re not answering my texts. I know I shouldn’t ask, but there really isn’t anyone else.

Mom: The money will be good and I promise it would only be one time.

A hollow pit opened in Nash’s gut. There was a child inside him, wishing his mom was a good person. He wished she loved him like a normal mom. Nash wished her love didn’t hinge so much on what Nash could do for her. He hadn’t heard from her since she came to his house to talk about Jason. It had been all about Mike then too. Nash knew she hadn’t really cared if he came around for her birthday. She had never loved anyone as much as she did the man who beat her kids and kept her down. But Nash’s whole life, he hadn’t given up hope that she would care about him.

Nash’s gaze slid River’s way. He stood between his parents, giving the pair hugs and saying his goodbyes. River had no idea how much his parents loved him. While they went out of their way to embarrass him, it was all done in love. They knew how to weed out the weak. They wanted a good and strong man for their son. Nash hadn’t always been good, but he wasn’t going anywhere. As he looked on, River’s mom toyed with River’s hair and asked about his finances. She wanted to know how much food was in his fridge and if he had gas in his car. Nash’s chest hurt. His eyes burned. He glanced back down at his phone and read through his messages once more. Then he blocked his mom’s number.

River’s dad jogged down the front steps, heading Nash’s way. Nash stuffed his phone in his back pocket and smiled. River looked like his dad. While his eyes were exactly like his mom’s, River had gotten everything else from his father. Todd was short and dark-haired like River, except there was some gray mixed in and his eyes crinkled in the corners from where he obviously smiled a lot. Now was no different.

“Thanks again for coming tonight,” Todd said, shaking Nash’s hand.
